COMMERCIAL LICENSE, COPYRIGHT & ETHICAL IMPACT

Understanding copyright, licenses and the ethics of using photography of people under releases can be overwhelming if you’re not familiar with the process. Here’s some info that I hope you find helpful on the basics of these practises.

1. COPYRIGHT

As the photographer, I retain the copyright to all images created during our session. This means that while you have permission to use your images as agreed upon, I legally own the work itself. This is a standard practice in photography, ensuring that artistic integrity and creator rights are protected.

That said, I want you to feel confident in using your images in ways that serve you best. Every client receives a license that outlines what’s included in their package—whether it’s personal use, professional branding, or commercial applications.

If you’re unsure about what’s covered or need additional usage rights, we can always discuss what options work best for you.

2. COMMERCIAL LICENSE

If you plan to use your images commercially—such as for advertising, selling products, distributing content for profit, or monetizing in any way—you’ll need a commercial license. This license extends your usage rights beyond personal promotion and ensures that the work is valued appropriately for business use.

Commercial licensing is included in my

Commercial packages, this is not the case for my personal portraiture package. The specifics—such as where and how the images can be used, time limits, and exclusivity—will be outlined clearly in our agreement. This ensures transparency and protects both of us while giving you the freedom to use your images in ways that align with your business needs.

If you have unique requirements for licensing, let’s talk about what makes sense for your project!

3. ETHICAL USE

I approach every session with deep respect for cultural identity, bodily autonomy, and the unique lived experiences of my clients. As someone who acknowledges the privileges that I have awareness of and works to be as intersectionally aware as possible, I recognize that representation in photography carries weight—especially for those in marginalized or misrepresented communities.

For clients working in sex work, burlesque, drag, erotic art, and other highly personal or vulnerable spaces, I understand that privacy, image ownership, and consent are critical concerns. My goal is to ensure that you have control over how your images are used, while also maintaining ethical boundaries that protect both of us.

If you have specific needs regarding privacy, anonymity, or content use, we’ll work together to establish clear agreements that respect your comfort levels. My priority is to create images that empower and uplift you while ensuring that you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.

If you have any questions or concerns about copyright, licensing, or ethical considerations, I’m always happy to have an open and transparent conversation.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PORTRAIT PACKAGES & COMMERCIAL PACKAGES

Photography is never one-size-fits-all, and neither are my sessions. I offer both commercial photography and creative portrait photography, but they serve different purposes—and they shape the way I approach each shoot.

Commercial photography is goal-driven and industry-specific. It’s about crafting images that serve a clear purpose—whether that’s promoting a brand, showcasing a service, or visually narrating a business’s story. My focus here is on precision, messaging, and execution: What story are we telling? Where will these images be published? What lighting, setting, and compositions will best serve the client’s needs? Whether it’s a documentary-style shoot capturing a professional retreat, or carefully staged imagery for a campaign, my role is to bring clarity and intention to every shot.

Creative portrait photography is where my full artistic vision comes into play. While my portrait clients are welcome to use their images for branding or promotional purposes, that’s a byproduct—not the goal. My portrait work is deeply collaborative, shaped by the energy and aesthetic my clients bring, but unrestricted by commercial demands. It’s for those who want to see themselves as art. Many of my clients—sex workers, performers, queer entrepreneurs—come to me because mainstream photography doesn’t represent them. They aren’t just looking for images; they’re looking for my images, for the way I see them. And that’s exactly what I give them.

Because of the structured, goal-oriented nature of commercial work, pricing is higher than portrait sessions. Commercial shoots require a different level of planning, setup, and execution, and the intended use of the images affects everything from licensing to creative control.

If you’re unsure which type of session is right for you, think about what you need from the images. Do you have a specific vision with clear goals for publication or branding? Then commercial photography is the right fit. Do you want to collaborate on an artistic vision that represents you authentically, without the constraints of marketing strategy? Then let’s create something just for you.

Either way, if you’re here, it’s probably because you don’t see yourself in mainstream photography. That’s exactly why I do what I do.
